THE CJ is a singer, artist, and musician from Great Falls, Montana. They hit the music scene strong last year, immediately charting and getting TV news attention with their single Don’t Lose Yourself. As of recently, THE CJ has been hard at work in the studio building a catalog of over 20 songs. “Wrong About Me” is their next single that just dropped. With a vibrant and daring blend of alternative rock and pop, along with motivational lyrical content, Wrong About Me emphasizes the importance of maintaining personal authenticity and acts as a musical beacon for self-love. This is just the first of many original singles THE CJ has in store for this year.
Hi THE CJ! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us. To start, can you tell us what you’ve been up to so far this year and what you have planned for the remainder of 2024 as an artist?
2024 has been a great year for my music so far! I’ve written and produced demos for many songs! And I have more writing and demos planned as well as at least one song release!
Let’s talk more about “Wrong About Me”. When and where did you write the song?
Wrong About Me was written at a songwriting camp with a group of fabulous writers to support me and bring my vision to life. Wrong About Me is about people, a little more specifically romantic partners and exes assuming they know you just because they’re with you. And it’s about how usually it turns out they don’t know you that well at all and how you can tell them off and you’re better off without them.
What made you choose “Wrong About Me” to be the first single release this year off your upcoming project?
Out of all the tracks we’ve worked on so far, Wrong About Me just resonated with me most, and it had the best vibes to me. It is also the closest to the genre I’m trying too get to.
What’s your favorite lyric in the song?
“Still not your Mona Lisa” is just a great line. I hate how people try to make you what they want. And this line just resonates with that.
What was the process like for finishing the song after the initial writing happened?
After the song was written and the demo was produced, we listened to it over and over again, making adjustments and perfecting things to ultimately re-record a final version.
What musical influences would you say shine through in this record?
One of my big influences is Paramore. And I think that their influence really shines in Wrong About Me.
Stylistically, for the rest of the project coming soon, can we expect similar vibes to this single, or does it ebb and flow overall?
As a new artist, I’m still finding my vibes and my sound. So, some of the tracks are kind of pop, some of them are kind of rock. But they’re all amazing tracks and I’m excited to share them!
What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not making music?
When I’m not making music, I enjoy art, listening to other music, and cuddling with my cats.
Who would be a dream artist for you to collaborate with?
Working with My Chemical Romance or any of their affiliates would be a dream come true. I’ve loved their music since I was 13, and I even have a tattoo related to them. So working with them would be a full circle, dream come true moment for me.
What’s next for you after this EP drops?
After the EP drops, I’m hoping to look at making an album, and hopefully starting to book live shows. Anything I do though, will be announced on my social media, so just keep an eye on that!
