Broadway Actor and Musician Joshua Turchin is working his next musical inspired by his interest in pirates! This young musical prodigy is keeping the idea under wraps, or should I say, under the sea, until he is finished with it, but he did release a snippet of a song and his fans went crazy. I’m not sure how he finds the time to write considering he is performing and producing shows all over New York in such historic clubs as Below 54. I recently caught up with Joshua in between writing sessions to ask about this new venture.
Can you tell us a little about the new musical you are working on?
The musical I’m working on is a pirate musical! I don’t want to share too much yet since I’m still writing it, but the general concept is that it examines romanticism versus reality in regard to history.
How would you describe the soundtrack?
Much of the music of the show is inspired and influenced by iconic sea shanties and Celtic music, as well as traditional musical theatre songs.
What was the inspiration for this new musical?
I’ve always loved the idea of writing a musical about pirates, so about two years ago I wrote a concept song for it. I really decided to write the show after I got on the worst cruise of my life. I got off and immediately started to develop the show. I shared some cuts of a song as I was playing around with, and it got over 1,000,000 views across my social media.

What is your songwriting process?
I lock myself in a room for a few hours and try to figure out what would make the most sense for lyrics and melody.
Once you have the musical written, what are the next steps?
Heavily revising. I’m planning on doing a private reading of the show as soon as I’m done with the first draft to hear it out loud with other performers.
If you could cast any actor in the lead, who would it be and why?
I’m not sure! Until the show is done, I don’t have any ideas for who the main character could be played by, and that’s part of the fun for me.
What’s next for you as an artist?
I’ve been working on some new stand-alone songs that I plan on releasing soon and have some upcoming shows in NYC.
